Pope Benedict XVI: Follow Me on Twitter for Lent

If you haven't decided on a spiritual course to follow during the 40 days of the Lenten season, Pope Benedict XVI has an idea: follow him on Twitter for daily inspiration.

The time between Ash Wednesday and Easter is traditionally a time for many Christians to either give up a vice or favorite treat, or dedicate themselves to service of others during the season of penitence.

According to the Vatican Radio website, themes from Pope Benedict's 2012 Lenten message will be sent on Twitter every day.

It's an attempt to attract younger and more media-savvy users to the Church's messages, the website says.

"Many of the key Gospel ideas are readily rendered in just 140 characters,” said Msgr Paul Tighe of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.

The Pope tweets in multiple languages and started his Lenten messages Wednesday.

There's also a Pope2You website with an iPad, iPhone and Facebook application.
