Pope Pride lorry wrongly banned, German High Court rules

A German high court has today ruled that a parade lorry sporting controversial images of the pope was wrongly banned from a German Pride celebration, in Munich.

Dietmar Holzapfel, who works in Munich’s largest gay hotel, attempted to take part in an annual European Pride celebration, Christopher Street Day, back in 2006 but police deemed that the decorations on the float he had entered into the parade were too controversial and must be removed.

The wagon displayed images of Pope Benedict XVI in clown makeup, wearing a condom as a ring on his finger and a robe decorated with the World Aids Day red ribbon.

The display also featured signs with inflammatory quotes that have been made by the pope.

After over three years of battling the decision in the courts, the high court has now ruled that Hozapfel is allowed to display the pictures, and others of a similar type, in the parade and that the police had no grounds for objection.
