A LOVELY Girls competition got under way at the weekend without incurring the wrath of the 'PC Brigade'. It was the highlight of the fourth ever Ted Fest held on Inis Mor, the biggest of the three Aran Islands, off the coast of Galway.
Tickets were quickly snapped up for the 'first sitting' of Ted Fest, which celebrated the cult television programme 'Father Ted' and marked the anniversary of the untimely death of its star, comedian Dermot Morgan.
More than 250 people made a beeline for the island, with the simple-minded Fr Dougal McGuire, infamously played by comedian Ardal O'Hanlon in the television series, proving the most popular character among those donning the black garb.
Some of the visitors took part in late night 'Hide a nun and seek', others joined in the priests versus nuns beach volleyball contest while some celebrants were regaled by the vocals of Sister Mills and Sister Boons.
Dozens of people followed a 10ft-high winged angel, sculpted in tribute to the tea-loving Mrs Doyle, as they paraded from the pier to Watty's pub, which was re-christened the Parochial House.
Organisers have planned a 'second sitting' on another island, Inis Oirr, for the coming weekend of March 4-7 due to the level of demand for the bizarre festivities.
