Church leader asks loyalist groups to stay calm

THE Church of Ireland Primate pleaded yesterday with loyalist paramilitaries not to retaliate against republican dissidents responsible for the murders of a policeman and two British soldiers in the North.

Archbishop of Armagh, Alan Harper, also warned the loyalist community that any act of retaliation against the Continuity IRA and the Real IRA would "only play into the hands" of the militant republicans who wanted to destroy the peace process.

He urged anyone with information that might lead to the apprehension of "the evil people who have perpetrated these perverted acts" to make it available to the PSNI or gardai.

Aspirations

"Violent acts do not serve the legitimate political aspirations of anyone on this island," Archbishop Harper said.

The Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin, Dr John Neill, said the people of Ireland had agreed to move forward through the political process, and "the actions of an unrepresentative minority will not be allowed to disrupt the democratic process and turn us back to darker days".

In a joint statement the Catholic and Protestant bishops, John McAreavey and Harold Miller, whose areas cover Craigavon, where PSNI officer Paul Carroll was shot on Monday evening, condemned his killing as "cold-blooded" and "morally bankrupt".
