Stephen Cardinal Kim in Critical Condition

Stephen Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan, a senior Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and former Archbishop of Seoul, is in critical condition, Chosun Ilbo reported.

According to the Catholic Seoul Archdiocese, Kim had been staying in hospital because of his old age and frail health. He reportedly fell into a coma briefly early Saturday morning.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, current Archbishop of Seoul, and Archbishop Osvaldo Padilla, apostolic nuncio to Korea by the Holy See, and other senior Catholic officials in Seoul paid an urgent visit to him Saturday.

An official with the Catholic Seoul Archdiocese said, “Kim’s state was very bad in the morning, but he has recovered consciousness after emergency treatment.”

Kim was born in Daegu, and studied philosophy at Sophia University in Tokyo and at Catholic University of Korea from 1947 to 1951. He later traveled to Germany to study sociology.

Kim became the Archbishop of Seoul in 1968. At the age of 46, he was the youngest member of the College of Cardinals at that time. In 1998, Cardinal Kim retired.
