The new Archbishop of Cincinnati is Bishop Dennis Schnurr of Duluth. Pope Benedict made the choice of Schnurr who was one of the finalists for the top job in Pittsburgh earlier this year.
Bishop Schnurr will replace Archbishop Daniel Pilarcyzk who is retiring next year. Pilarcyzk took over the Cincinnati diocese in 1982 replacing his mentor Cardinal Joseph Bernadin.
Pilarcyzk was the ninth Archbishop of Cincinnati and saw the diocese through the church sex abuse scandal.
In 2003, it was Archbishop Pilarcyzk who appeared in court on behalf of the church to plead no contest to charges that it failed to report abusive priests.
Pilarcyzk turns 75 next year, the Catholic Church's retirement age.
Bishop Schnurr the new coadjutor for Cincinnati is 60 years old. He has been Bishop in Duluth Minnesota for the past 7 years. He is a native of Iowa and rose to prominence in the church after serving as the executive director for World Youth Day in Denver in 1992. He has also served as general secretary of the US bishops' conference.
Bishop Schnurr says, "It is humbling to be called by the Holy Father to serve as the Coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Relying upon the help of God and the prayers of the People of God, I have accepted the nomination."
Schnurr says he is particularly thankful that he has been asked to serve with Archbishop Pilarcyzk who he holds in "highest esteem."
