The CathNews USA daily service is like its Australian sister publication with an additional feature - web streaming - and all US content, a Church Resources media statement announces.
It is a project done in partnership between Paulist Press, Sydney-based Church Resources and Jesuit Communications Australia based in Richmond, Victoria.
"Each party makes a distinctive contribution," according to Fr Michael Kelly, executive director of Church Resources.
"Paulist Press is a highly respected and long established part of Catholic publishing in the US. Jesuit Communications Australia is a well resourced internet and electronic publisher.
"Church Resources has developed a lot of experience in both publishing on the net and marketing. It makes a very nice fit of competencies and desire to enhance the Church's mission in cyberspace."
CathNews USA will have news stories, features and profiles from US and international sources, focused to inform American Catholics with information relevant to US issues and concerns.
"As with CathNews in Australia, we want this publication to be respected for its fairness, honesty and accuracy," said Fr Kelly.
"It will contain material available on the web which our editors will process, seeking a balanced account of significant people, developments and events. The aim is to offer a brief and tight synopsis that is quick and easy to digest. So many Australians tell us they value highly the neat summary that daily service provides."
CathNews USA will go initially to 7,000 opt-in email addresses of Paulist Press customers. "We have high hopes of making the US edition just what our Australian publication has become, the most visited religious site on the web in Australia, as measured by Hit Wise, the industry measuring stick."
