Catholic Archbishop puts Brisbane parish on notice

The Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane has put a parish on notice for not being in communion with the Roman Catholic Church.

Archbishop John Bathersby has written to the community of St Mary's in South Brisbane, asking the parish to make a decision as to whether it will abide by the rules of the Roman Catholic Church.

There has been an ongoing dispute over numerous issues at St Mary's, including the words used to baptise and marry people.

The most recent complaint involved the placement of what Archbishop Bathersby believes was a Buddhist statue in the church.

Archbishop Bathersby says his authority is scarcely recognised by the parish of St Mary's and he has asked the community to decide whether it wants to be in communion with the church or operate independently.

The community of St Mary's will meet to discuss the issue tomorrow night.
