Pope's envoy criticizes liberal Catholics demo

The Pope's envoy to Switzerland has criticized liberal Catholics for protesting the church's leadership on issues such as sexuality and women's equality.

Papal Nuncio Francesco Canalini says groups who try to use public pressure to push through liberal interpretations of dogma are acting against the spirit of the Catholic Church.

Canalini said Monday that only the Pope could correctly interpret tenets of faith.

About 1,500 Catholics took to the streets of the central Swiss city of Lucerne on Sunday to demand more democracy in the Roman Catholic Church.

Liberal Catholics in Switzerland were also angered by the Pope's decision in January to lift the excommunication of four bishops belonging to the ultraconservative Society of St. Pius X.
