Bishops 'awaiting' new Lisbon treaty

The Irish Catholic bishops have still to discuss their approach to the EU Lisbon reform treaty in a second referendum expected this autumn.

Archbishop of Dublin Dr Diarmuid Martin said it was news to him when he read a newspaper report announcing that the Irish bishops had decided to encourage a 'Yes' vote in a second referendum.

"The bishops have not discussed the matter and there is no way in which I could envisage making any comment without knowing first something about the nature and the precise text of the protocols that will be agreed upon," Archbishop Martin told the Institute of International and European Affairs in Dublin.

"We have to wait", he added, referring to the final form of formal texts to be voted on specifying these guarantees being negotiated by the Government ahead of a second referendum.
