Prosecutor's Office accuses priests of child abuse

The Koblenz public prosecutor's office has brought charges against a priest on suspicion of child abuse

It was a 49-year-old from the Westerwald district, said a spokesman for the prosecutor's office on Monday. He is accused of having performed sexual acts on a child in 2019.

The charges were brought before the district court of Montabaur; the court must now decide on their admission.

According to the newspaper report in Liechtenstein, the man was ordained a priest by the then Archbishop Wolfgang Haas from Vaduz, although he had previously been found unsuitable for priestly ministry in the diocese of Limburg.

Diocese spokesman Stephan Schnelle is quoted as saying that the man "does not meet the criteria that the diocese of Limburg places on candidates for the priesthood."

According to the "Süddeutsche Zeitung", the German municipal parish priest had been in Liechtenstein for many years.

However, in October 2019, accusations had arisen that he had sexually abused an eight-year-old girl in the rectory of Ruggell (Liechtenstein).

According to the newspaper report, the man now lives in the diocese of Limburg again – but the church has forbidden him to do all pastoral activities.
