Five Ontario physicians, one of them Catholic, recently launched a
legal challenge to a mandate by the College of Physicians and Surgeons
of Ontario requiring physicians to make referrals for patients who
request assisted suicide.
The five physicians have the support of the Christian Medical and
Dental Society of Canada, the Canadian Federation of Catholic
Physicians’ Societies, and Canadian Physicians for Life, as well as the
province’s bishops.
Ontario’s attorney general has backed the College of
Physicians and Surgeons.
“A lot of our people would be very upset to learn doctors were being
forced to act against their conscience,” said Bishop Ronald Fabbro of
London, president of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario.
