The remains of the first Catholic bishop of Perth,
John Brady, were carried through the streets of the city on Monday
night, on the eve of his reinterment, reports the West Australian.
The remains had been ferried
to Barrack Street jetty in a re-enactment of Bishop Brady's original
arrival in Perth by boat from Fremantle.
There the remains were met by Archbishop Barry Hickey, other senior
members of the Church, parishioners and relatives of Bishop Brady,
including some who had come from Ireland for the reinterment on Tuesday.
Bells at the Belltower and St George's Cathedral rang out as the
party of about 50 walked past in solemn procession, reciting prayers.
Council House was illuminated in red light and then the St Mary's
Cathedral bells rang as the remains were carried into St John's, the
original Catholic cathedral in the city, where evening prayers were said
by candlelight.
Bishop Brady's remains will join the remains of two bishops and three archbishops in the new crypt under St Mary's Cathedral.
