Francis Cardinal George put Pfleger on leave for two weeks after he made some controversial comments about Senator Hillary Clinton.
The 10 a.m. mass will be the only one said at St. Sabina Catholic church on Sunday as Fr. Pfleger hopes to bring his entire congregation together during the first service headed up by him since his two-week suspension started on June 3.
Incendiary remarks mocking then presidential candidate Hillary Clinton got Fr. Pfleger into trouble. The priest was asked whether he would change anything now that he is back at the pulpit.
"I'm trying to come back a little more reflective on how I say things but I'm not going to change one bit in the fight for justice. While people are dying, while children are being killed, while communities are suffering, I'm going to continue to be a voice," said Pfleger.
It's not the first time that Fr. Pfleger has gotten in trouble with the archdiocese for his unconventional style. Still, despite calls to have him transferred, Pleger is the longest serving priest at St. Sabina.
But this time, he says he has promised Francis Cardinal George that he will no longer speak out on political matters.
Under Fr. Pfleger's stewardship, St. Sabina's congregation has grown tremendously over the years. It is widely believed that this growth is the reason why the archdiocese has let him continue at its head since it is not customary for Catholic priests to remain at any one parish for such an extended period of time.
