I read with complete dismay the article about a gay couple in a Wyoming diocese denied Communion in their own church.
Perhaps we forget that, as Catholics, we are called to have a very different view of the world and our associations and relationships.
Catholic Communion is not a "you 'n me, Jesus" activity subject to the current trend of simplistic moralistic scrutiny. Some people find no contradiction in calling themselves Christian while comfortably pointing out the perceived flaws of another.
Communion is redemptive, inclusive, and receptive.
Communion, by its very nature and in a very catholic sense, is a communal action. Excluding one excludes all. If some self-righteous doctrinal jurist determines the act is corrupt because it evidences imperfection, then the entire community and its action should be halted.
The fact that we feel tempted to judge another should prompt instead a realization that we have before us a challenge.
Judging others is easy. Anyone can do it on the basis on anything. Refraining from judging is the test of the Christian.
And recognizing the presence of sin and imperfection (and ever-evolving social norms) in our collective soul and loving and celebrating the collective anyway - well, that is the Catholic challenge.
Who among us should throw the first stone?
