Irish Census Figures Show Increase In Marital Breakdowns

Ireland's latest census shows a sharp increase in the number of broken marriages.

The latest census figures show 198,592 people who are separated, divorced, and remarried.

That figure represents a 28% increase from the latest census in 2002, observes the Iona Institute, an organization dedicated to strengthening marriage.

In 1986, the Irish census found fewer than 37,000 people in the same category, the Iona Institute notes. "This means that over a period of only 20 years the number of people who have experienced a broken marriage has soared by 161,592 or 536%."

The census figures also point to a significant increase in the number of couples living together outside of marriage: from 77,616 in 2002 to 103,887 in the latest account, for a 34% increase.

"At this rate of increase we will soon have a marital breakdown culture on a par with America and Britain," says Tom O'Gorman of the Iona Institute.

"This is in no one's interest."
