Toronto Archdiocese: priest’s ministerial faculties restored after abuse allegation determined false

The Archdiocese of Toronto this week announced that a priest’s faculties for ministry have been restored following an investigation that determined an abuse allegation against him was false.

“The Salesian Fathers investigated and determined the accusation was ‘frivolous and lacking a semblance of truth,’” an August 29 press release from the Archdiocese stated, adding that the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith accepted the determination.

In 2020, Fr. Nino Cavoto was removed from active ministry after he was accused of abusing a minor when he served in the Archdiocese of New York, which was between 1979 and 1983, according to an August 20, 2020 news release from the Archdiocese of Toronto.

Fr. Cavoto was ordained a priest for the Salesians of Don Bosco in 1977. He was serving as pastor at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in 2020 when the Archdiocese of Toronto learned of the allegation.

According to the August 29 press release, a civil process in the state of New York is ongoing, but the canonical process is complete.
