Eight Galway schools run by religious orders have been named by the Scoping Inquiry into historical sexual abuse.
In the report, published yesterday September 3, over 800 people have been accused of more than 2,300 instances of historical sexual abuse at 308 religious schools across the country.
In Galway, eight schools were mentioned in the report as over 138 allegations were made across the county.
The Holy Family School in Renmore, run by the Brothers of Charity religious order, had 119 allegations and 49 alleged abusers.
Run by Christian Brothers, Tuam CBS Primary had nine allegations against four alleged abusers; while Tuam CBS Secondary had two allegations against two alleged abusers.
Scoil Aine Kylemore Abbey Post-Primary run by Benedictine Nuns had two allegations and two alleged abusers.
Jesuits post-primary school Colaiste Iognaid had three allegations made against one alleged abuser; while primary school Scoil Iognaid, also run by Jesuits, had two allegations and two alleged abusers.
St Brendan’s Boys National School run by De La Salle Brothers in Loughrea had one allegation and one alleged abuser.
St. Patricks NS, run by Patrician Brothers and located in Galway City, was also mentioned in the report but had an undisclosed number of allegations and an undisclosed number of alleged abusers.
The report reads that sexual abuse happened between the 1960s and the early 1990s, with the highest number of reported incidents occurring in the early to mid-1970s.
The report heard from many survivors who said that “their childhood stopped the day the abuse started.”
