Up to 20 years in prison: Priest embezzles money from retired pastors

In the USA, a priest has been sentenced to prison for embezzling 780,000 dollars.

He had embezzled the money from three retired priests in a Catholic retirement home, US media reported on Monday.

The 72-year-old clergyman from the US state of Michigan was the director of the retirement home in the Diocese of Lansing from 2015 to 2021, where the retired priests had lived until their deaths a few years ago.

The perpetrator had access to the money of the priests, who had entrusted him with the management of their assets.

The convicted man is said to have used the embezzled money for a charitable foundation belonging to his family.

In December 2022, the priest was charged with embezzlement.

He protested his innocence in court.

When the judge read out the verdict, she criticised the perpetrator's lack of remorse.

Due to his behaviour in systematically embezzling the money of the retired priests, further acts in the future cannot be ruled out, the judge said.

Following the jury's verdict on Monday, the court still has to determine the exact sentence.

The priest will have to spend between four and 20 years in prison.

He must also pay financial compensation to the families of the three victims.

The judgement is not yet final.

Last month, the priest had already been convicted of further offences by a court.

He had embezzled further sums of money in the six-figure range from dependent persons and had also committed fraud and perjury.

The Diocese of Lansing had condemned the priest's actions at the time and assured the families of the victims of his prayers.

The diocesan bishop of Lansing suspended the priest in 2022.

A canonical investigation is pending.
