"Over the years we have seen the pain caused by a broken immigration
system, by structural policies and economic conditions, that generate
threats, deportations, impunity and extreme violence. This situation
occurs both in the relationship between central America and Mexico and
between the United States and Mexico", says the statement of the meeting
of the border Bishops between Texas and northern Mexico.
"Immigration is a global phenomenon that has its origin in economic and
social conditions, poverty and insecurity, with the displacement of
entire populations, of families who cannot find other options for
survival", the text continues.
"But today this reality is marked more than ever by the measures that
civil authorities are taking. The adoption of government policies that
respect basic human rights of undocumented migrants is necessary", say
the participants in the meeting that has been held since 1986.
The statement concluded by reaffirming the commitment of the various
charitable institutions in the United States and the different houses of
Migrants in Mexico: "We continue to provide spiritual, legal, material
assistance to immigrants".
