BELIZE - Resignation of the Bishop of Belize City-Belmopan and appointment of successor

Today the Holy Father accepted the resignation from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Belize City-Belmopan, in Belize, presented by His Exc. Mgr. Dorick McGowan Wright. 

The Holy Father appointed Reverend Lawrence Sydney Nicasio, of the clergy of Belize, parish Priest of the Cathedral in Belize City as Bishop of the Diocese of Belize City-Belmopan.

Rev. Lawrence Sydney Nicasio was born in Belize, on September 5th 1956. 


After attending Auster High School in Belize City, he was a student at the Belize Teachers College and taught for several years in the schools of the Diocese before starting his formation for priesthood. 

He carried his ecclesiastical studies in the United States. 

In 1995 he obtained a Baccalaureate in Philosophy at the Glennon Seminary in the Archdiocese of Saint Louis, and in 1989 he completed his theological studies with a Master of Divinity at the Kenrich College Seminary. 

On 16 June 1989 he was ordained a priest in the Cathedral of Belize City-Belmopan.
Since his ordination he has served the following roles: 1989-1995: Assistant priest at Our Lady of Guadelupe Co-Cathedral, in Belmopan; 1995-2006: Pastor of the Parish of the Inmaculada, in Orange Walk, Secretary and Treasurer of the Council of Priests, Master of Liturgical Celebrations and of various activities at a diocesan level; 2006-2007: Sabbatical Year; 2007-2013: Parish priest of San Ignacio, and Administrator of St. John Vianney Parish in Belize City; 2007-2009: President of the Diocesan Priest Association and member of the College of Consultors; 2013: pastor of Holy Redeemer Cathedral, Belize City.
