Archbishop John Onaiyekan of Abuja, Nigeria was one of the six men
created Cardinal on Saturday at the Ordinary Public Consistory for the
purpose, over which Pope Benedict XVI presided.
Cardinal Onaiyekan spoke
with the head of Vatican Radio’s English for Africa service, Fr. Moses
Hamungole.
“I feel a sense of responsibility,” said Cardinal Onaiyekan,
adding, “I also consider it an honour.”
Noting the prospects of the new
role for fostering peace and reconciliation in his country, Cardinal
Onaiyekan went on to say, “Christians and Muslims [both] rejoice that
they have a Cardinal – I think it is good.”
