A new County Meath based website that aims to portray some of the county’s top ecclesiastical sites was launched this week.
The new Book of Kells Experience website was launched this week at
Teltown House in Kells by local MEP Mairead McGuinness who stressed the
importance of cultural and heritage tourism as part of the recovery
strategy for the Irish economy.
The Book of Kells Experience and the website www.bookofkells.tourguide.ie
is designed to encourage tourists to visit the town's strong
ecclesiastical sites and the website itself is set against the backdrop
of some of the most beautiful pages from the book of Kells which was
produced in the vicinity and is now stored in Trinity College in
Dublin.
According to the chairperson of Kells Town Council Cllr Conor
Ferguson, the site reflects the town's rich ecclesiastical heritage,
making it readily available for all to see.
Among the sites featured on the website are the Monastic site founded
by Saint Colmcille, the Kells Round Tower and famous Celtic Crosses and
Saint Colmcille's House where the Historic Book of Kells was written in
the year 800.
The site also features Tour's to some of the country's most famous
High Crosses near the village of Carnaross as well as Saint Ciaran's
Well.
