A group of Missionary Sisters are planning to open a center in Benin City, Nigeria to support women facing crisis situations, especially those escaping from human traffickers or forced prostitution.
The center scheduled to open in mid 2007 will be supported by a group of women religious from various congregations.
The whole project has also been financed by Caritas-Italy and the Committee for Charitable Interventions for the Third World of the Italian Episcopal Conference.
According to Consolata Sister, Eugenia Bonetti, most of the women who are forced into prostitution in Europe are from Nigeria.
The sisters who will work with these women will visit the new center to learn the culture and environment from which the latter come.
"The Nigerian center will have 18 beds and aims to provide shelter for youths returning to the country for various reasons, such as voluntary return or mass expulsion, mental illness or other types of illnesses, and who are needing protection or are rejected by their families," she said.
