The bishops in Argentina are still hoping for a visit from Pope Francis to his home country.
However, in an interview with the Catholic News Agency (KNA) on Sunday, Marcelo Daniel Colombo, President of the Argentine Bishops' Conference, admitted that it is currently impossible to say exactly when this might happen.
"We know that he wants it and that we want it," said the Archbishop of Mendoza. However, the diary for 2025 is very full, not least because of the Holy Year and other trips already planned. But Pope Francis has special ties to Argentina: "A visit to his homeland is his wish, and we believe that he will fulfil it as soon as he can."
Bridges, consensus and dialogue
Even after a year under President Javier Milei, Argentina still needs bridges, consensus and dialogue, the archbishop continued.
"It was clear that it would be difficult for this government because it does not have the parliamentary majorities. Nevertheless, agreements were reached, negotiations were held and steps were taken to be able to implement some points such as a reorganisation and deregulation of the economy," he said.
However, he warned against an "exuberant and very aggressive political language" that lacked an appreciation of the institutional.
"But we believe that the institutions are at the service of democracy and social life. Argentina needs bridges, consensus and dialogue. Ruptures and this excessive language have never done us any good."
