Cardinal Karl Lehmann, who led the German Bishops’ Conference from
1987 to 2008, has expressed shock at the election of Donald Trump,
according to the Austrian bishops’ news agency.
Cardinal Lehmann, 80, fears a growing “populist groundswell” and said
that the media underestimated the number of Americans who feel they are
“social losers” (gesellschaftliche Verlierer).
The prelate added that he could not understand why so many voters “fall for” populist assertions.
