Security
sources in Lebanon informed that they have arrested two terrorist teams
who intended to assassinate Pope Benedict XVI during his recent visit
to Beirut.
The sources told the Arabic-language website, al-Nashrah, that the
members of one of the terrorist cells were arrested in Beirut's coastal
area the same morning that the Pope wanted to show up publically.
The sources didn't provide any precise information about when and where the second terrorist group was apprehended.
Pope Benedict XVI made a three-day visit to Lebanon mid September which was seen as an important visit as Lebanon.
The Pope dubbed his visit to the ethnically diverse Lebanon as a
pilgrimage of harmony for the entire Middle East.
The Lebanese
government positioned severe security measures for the visit, which was
restricted to central and northern Lebanon's Christian areas.
The Lebanese government declared a one-day official holiday in honor
of Pope Benedict XVI to enable Christian students to meet and greet
him.
40% of Lebanon's population is constituted by Christians while the remainder consists of Shiite Muslims and Sunni Muslims.
Lebanon's resistance group, Hezbollah, welcomed the Pope's visit, classifying it as extraordinary.
