President Michel Sleiman received a thank you note from Pope Benedict
XVI over the warm welcome he recieved during his recent visit to
Lebanon, a statement from Sleiman’s press office said Sunday.
“Pope Benedict sent a letter to the President thanking him over the
warm welcome he received from the authorities and the people,” the
statement said.
In his letter, the pontiff said the visit had a great impression over
him and became an unforgettable memory to keep in his heart.
“I was very happy to meet with the Christian and Muslim religious
dignitaries in the country, and I am glad I was given the chance to
address everyone,” the pope’s letter said.
The pontiff also expressed hope that Lebanon would be able to keep up
co-existence and cooperation among all its factions, saying he will
always pray for the country.
Pope Benedict XVI paid a historic three-day visit to Lebanon from
September 14, in which he was welcomed by mass rallies from different
sects, Lebanon’s officials and religious dignitaries.
During his visit, the pontiff called on the Lebanese to reject strife
and work for unity. He also praised the country’s diverse cultures and
faiths, and Lebanon’s diverse sectarian system, which he said was
unique.
