40, 000 pay last respect to Martini, cathedral open tonight

About 40,000 people have already paid their last respect to Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, the emeritus archbishop of Milan who died yesterday.

"Since the arrival of the corpse today, Saturday September 1, at 12.30, an uninterrupted flow of people (6,000 every hour, according to estimates) are paying their last tribute to Cardinal Martini in an atmosphere of contemplation and prayer", as it was made known by the diocesan office for social communication directed by don Davide Milani.

It will be possible to stand in front of the Milan emeritus archbishop until Monday September 3 at 11:30.

The cathedral will remain open  tonight in a long wake of prayers and songs organized by Catholic Action.
