A federal district court has granted an injunction barring
enforcement of the HHS mandate against five Catholic nonprofit
organizations founded by philanthropist Tom Monaghan.
The mandate compels most employers to offer insurance that covers contraception, sterilization, and some abortifacients.
“The sheer number of exceptions” to the mandate “undercut[s] the
government's argument that requiring religious objectors to provide
contraceptive coverage furthers vital interests,” said Judge Stephen
Murphy III, who was appointed to the bench by President George W. Bush.
