Catholic church denies paedophiles sent to Pacific

The Catholic Church of New Zealand has dismissed claims that some Roman Catholic priests who had sexually abused children are being moved to Pacific islands.

The claim was made by Australian psychologist and former nun Michelle Mulvihill who claims Pacific islands such as Papua New Guinea, in particular, are ideal hiding places for offending priests.

Three years ago, 62-year-old Catholic priest Frank Klep, who was sheltered in Samoa by the Salesian Order while he was on the run from police, was deported.

He later pleaded guilty in an Australian court to 13 charges of indecent assault against teenage boys in the eastern state of Victoria during the 1970s.
