Hundreds of evangelists with their eyes covered by bandanas staged a picket today in front the Supreme Court (SCJ) building, to ask that the Concordat between the Dominican State and the Vatican be ruled unconstitutional, and described it as "anachronistic and discriminatory."
Reverend Domingo Paulino, head of the “Jesus is Health and Eternal Life" ministry spoke before the throng and asked the high court to expedite the hearing on the appeal of unconstitutionality against the Concordat.
He handed a document to SCJ Chief Justice Jorge Subero’s secretary Grismilda Suero.
The appeal was filed June 11, 2006, and the prelate said the delay in handing down a ruling is a denegation of justice, as verdicts on other appeals filed more recently have already been published in the media.
Paulino said in an open secret that the evangelical community is discriminated against in the country’s political, social and economic levels. "The Catholic Church is the least benefits by the Concordat; this is a moral war, and those who love God must allow the food to be shared in conditions of equality."
He said they are not against the Catholic Church, and instead asked them not to go against the Supreme Court’s ruling.
"In today’s world the Concordat isn’t tolerated, it’s not that the Catholic Church is against it, which has many values, it’s not that civil society is against it or the Government, it’s that the Concordat is anachronistic and violates the fundamental rights of the citizens of the Dominican Republic," he said.
He said president Leonel Fernandez, whom he described as a prudent, conciliator and modern statesman, who invites the evangelists to the National Palace and treats them equality, shouldn’t continue his silence on the issued, because the topic can go beyond the country and harm the leadership the prelate said he has in Latin America.
