Seminary Instructor Backs Civil Unions (Italy)

An influential seminary teacher in Turin has signed a letter criticizing Church opposition to the legal recognition of same-sex unions, the newspaper Corriere della Sera reports.

Father Oreste Aime, who heads the theology department at the Turin seminary, is one of 100 prominent Catholics who signed an open letter indicating support for the civil-union proposal being put forward by the Italian government.

The letter, addressed to Cardinal Severino Poletto of Turin, expressed concern over the opposition voiced by the Italian bishops’ conference.
