'No Theological Disputes Between Catholics & Orthodox'

There are almost no theological disputes left between Orthodox and Catholic believers, and they should pool efforts to respond to modern challenges, Vienna Archbishop Cardinal Christoph Schonborn said in an interview published in the Thursday issue of the newspaper Trud.

"It seems that the history burden is the largest wall between our churches. Numerous theological debates of the past decades showed that the Orthodox and Catholic churches think alike on almost every theological issue," he said.

The major difference is the place of the Pope of Rome in the Christian hierarchy, the cardinal said. Catholics think that the pontiff is a direct heir to Apostle Peter.

In the opinion of the cardinal, the churches should primarily cooperate in "major social issues.

Whenever it is possible, Christians should speak with one voice."

"I think that the 'life culture' or the right to life from impregnation to natural death is the central point. This right is being often challenged with abortions, embryo research or euthanasia," he said.
