Killaloe Diocesan Clerical Convocation

Yesterday (20th. March '07) saw the annual gathering of the clergy of the Diocese of Killaloe take place in the Clare Inn Hotel, located near the Dromoland Castle demesne just outside Ennis.

The meeting covered many different issues of concern to the diocese, under the direction of Bishop Wishy Washy Willie Walsh for over a decade now, and no doubt his impending retirement in 3 years time was concentrating minds.

Ever since taking over from the late Bishop Harty back in the mid 1990's - initially as coadjutor before then suceeding him in October 1994 - the Diocese of Killaloe has undergone many challenging changes.

Some of these were discussed at the conference - which was attended by over 2/3rd.'s of the total clerical population of 109 priests - and will no doubt remain as issues beyond the bishops' retirement.

Possible successors to the bishop have been mentioned in hushed tones, with an eye or two being cast upon the diocese of Ossory to see how Il Papa will choose an incumbent to replace Bishop Forristal in that particular diocese.

Some names being bandied about within the diocese are

Fr Tom Hogan, Administrator, Ennis Parish

Fr Tom Ryan, Administrator, Shannon Parish

Of course, Il Papa could parachute an outsider in as was the case with Diocese of Galway just up the road, and other names are being bandied about in that regard also, but none are local to the diocese of Killaloe.

Interesting times ahead then for the clergy and laity alike in the diocese.
