The Austrian bishops’ conference has announced that Pope Benedict XVI will visit that country early in September.
Pope Benedict will travel to Vienna on September 7, the statement revealed.
The next day he will celebrate Mass at the Marian shrine of Mariazell, which is marking its 850th anniversary.
On September 9, the final day of his visit, the Pontiff will celebrate Mass at Vienna’s cathedral of St. Stephen.
Plans for the papal trip have been underway for several months, and last October 5, during a visit to the Vatican, Austria’s President Heinz Fischer issued a formal invitation for the papal visit.
The Vatican has not yet officially announced the Pope’s trip, in keeping with the standard policy of withholding any public notice until a few weeks before the papal trip takes place.
