European countries show that they are “weak and blind” when they
build walls to keep out immigrants, said that secretary-general of the
Italian bishops’ conference.
Bishop Nunzio Galantino said that the European community should
require nations to accept immigrants, and integrate them into their
societies.
Regarding the work required to help immigrants find a secure
place, he said that “you can’t save people’s lives and then not offer
them a possibility for the future.”
Bishop Galantino said that the deaths of immigrants who have drowned
as they sought refuge in Europe are “a slap to European democracy, which
is unable to safeguard and protect people who are fleeing tragic
situations that have also been created by the foreign policy and
economic choices” of the European nations.
