Advanced technology calls for tighter controls on space-based weapons, Vatican envoy tells UN

As society relies every more heavily on satellite technology, there is an increasing need for tight restrictions on the militarization of outer space, the Vatican’s permanent observer told a UN audience.

“At a time when basic resources, like water and power, are tied to control systems linked by satellite communications, the very life blood of societies is vulnerable to attacks in outer space,” reasoned Archbishop Bernardito Auza. 

He continued:

The humanitarian consequences of a war in space would be devastating for populations far beyond those of adversary states. With fundamental activities dependent on space-based technology, the impact on civilian life would be calamitous.

The archbishop recommended strong international standards to control military actions in outer space.
