In a message to the 19 prelates who will be elevated to the College
of Cardinals on February 22, Pope Francis has discouraged “any form of
celebration contrary to the evangelical spirit of austerity, sobriety
and poverty.”
New cardinals have often hosted expensive receptions after receiving
their red hats.
The Pope advised against elaborate parties in his
message, reminding the prelates that designation as a cardinal is
“neither an honor nor a decoration.”
Cardinals, the Pope observed, are expected to “broaden your gaze,” to
acts as advisers regarding the needs of the universal Church. To perform
properly in that role, he said, the prelates should follow “the same
path of the Lord: the path of self-effacement and humility, taking on
the role of a servant.”
