The Vatican has called on the tourism industry to use water more
responsibly, saying resorts and other holiday venues often waste water
to the deprivation of local populations.
"The sustainable management of this natural resource is a challenge
for the social, economic and environmental order, but especially because
of its ethical nature, starting from the principle of the universal
destination of the goods of the earth," says the Pontifical Council for
Migrants and Itinerants in a message released on 11 July for the
forthcoming World Day of Tourism.
"We are invited, therefore, to promote eco-tourism, environmentally
friendly and sustainable, that can surely promote the creation of new
jobs, support the local economy and reduce poverty," the message says.
"More determination from politicians and entrepreneurs is necessary,"
the Vatican message continued, adding there needed to be "binding,
specific and verifiable commitments" to ensure responsible use and just
distribution of water.
World Tourism Day is marked on 27 September.
