The Pope has appointed a Sydney bishop to replace Tasmania's retiring Catholic Archbishop Adrian Doyle.
He will replace Adrian Doyle, who has led the Tasmanian Archdiocese since 1999.
In a statement, the Most Reverend Doyle said the position had been a privilege and he was grateful for the friendship, loyalty and support he had been shown over the past 14 years.
Julian Porteous is currently an Auxiliary Bishop in Sydney.
He has been praised by the Australian Catholic Bishops conference for his outreach work with young people.
Bishop Porteous will make a short visit to Hobart next month, before he is installed as Archbishop in September.
