A senior cardinal has urged the Bishops of England and Wales to resist pressure to see themselves as functionaries or managers.
Cardinal Marc Ouellet, the Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops,
told the hierarchy that they faced "many challenges" in England and
Wales.
"Perhaps you can sense viscerally the pressure to obey men rather
than God, to see yourself as a mere manager or functionary rather than a
disciple or apostle," the cardinal said in a homily at the start of the
bishops' retreat in Villa Palazzola, Rome, on Sunday 14 April.
The cardinal urged the bishops to develop their personal relationship
with Jesus Christ and to enter into "uncomfortable questions", adding
that Pope Francis "also makes us feel uncomfortable".
