A bishop of the Church of England has announced his plan to resign
before the end of this year, and join an Anglican ordinariate in the
Catholic Church.
Bishop John Broadhurst of Fulham is the first leading Anglican prelate
to announce that he plans to accept the invitation offered by Pope
Benedict XVI in Anglicanorum Coetibus.
The papal document calls
for the creation of new ordinariates to serve the pastoral needs of
Anglicans who wish to preserve their traditions while entering into full
communion with the Roman Church.
Speaking on October 15 to a meeting of Forward in Faith, a conservative
Anglican group,
Bishop Broadhurst said that he would join the Catholic
ordinariate as soon as it was created.
Two other Anglican bishops,
Andrew Burnham of Ebbsfleet and Keith Netwon of Richborough, are
considered likely to join him.
