Sacramento turns from print to online

The Diocese of Sacramento has announced that it will stop publishing the 102-year-old diocesan newspaper but boost its online presence.

The Catholic Herald, which is distributed to 53,000 households throughout 20 counties in Northern California, will cease publication in June, The Sacramento Bee reports.

The diocese will also stop printing El Heraldo, the Spanish version of the paper.

"In these difficult economic times, we are no longer financially able to sustain the high cost of these publications," Bishop Jaime Soto said in a letter to church leaders.

In the fall, the diocese will begin publishing the Catholic Herald Magazine, a bimonthly magazine, at substantial savings, according to the bishop's letter.

The diocese will also step up its online presence.

"We're looking at ways to reach young Catholics," said Julie Sly editor of the Catholic Herald.
