Coin for inspirational MacKillop

Blessed Mary MacKillop will be the first person featured on a new series of Inspirational Australians coins.

Superannuation and Corporate Law Minister Nick Sherry said that as Australia's saint in waiting, Mother Mary MacKillop was a fitting choice to launch the series.

Royal Australian Mint coin designer Vladimir Gottwald has depicted MacKillop as guiding future generations.

"Mary was an exceptional Australian woman who stands as an example of great courage, trust and compassion, and as our first saint, she will forever inspire our nation," Senator Sherry said.

Born in Victoria in 1842, MacKillop was a teacher and Catholic nun.

She set up a parish school for underprivileged children in South Australia and started the Order of the Sisters of St Joseph, the first religious order founded by an Australian.

She was beatified by Pope John Paul 2 in 1995 and the process which could lead to her canonisation is underway.
