The State Library of Victoria has acquired an art deco painting depicting the flagellation of Christ with a full-blown orgy occurring below.The Australian Financial Review reports that it is on the reverse side of the canvas of a portrait of the late Melbourne Archbishop Daniel Mannix, who died in 1963.
The portrait is by Catholic artist Max Martin (1889-1956).
It shows Mannix as a genial but huge presence against a stylisted backdrop depicting St Patrick's Cathedral and the buildings of Fitzroy.
Mannix is said to have been impressed when visited an exhibition of Martin's works in Melbourne in 1950.
