Moeddel resigns as Catholic auxiliary bishop

Pope Benedict XVI accepted the resignation of Bishop Carl Moeddel, 69, due to illness, the Archdiocese said in a news release.

A native of Cincinnati, Moeddel graduated from the Athenaeum of Ohio and was ordained as a priest in 1962.

He held various administrative positions in the Archdiocese and served as pastor of St. Peter in Chains Cathedral and St. James of the Valley parish before being ordained a bishop in 1993.

"I have enjoyed working with (Moeddel) in many capacities over the years," Pilarczyk said in a news release.

"Since he became auxiliary bishop in 1993, he has been my right-hand man. I will sorely miss having the benefit of his wisdom, energy and experience."

The Archdiocese covers 19 counties in southwestern and western Ohio.
