Priest in Lamia assaults police after traffic violation

Police in Lamia have arrested a priest after he became verbally and physically aggressive after the license plates of his car were removed following a traffic violation.

Local media reported that the cleric had caused a minor traffic accident and had parked his vehicle for a long time at a spot that was obstructing traffic.

When he returned to the vehicle, he found that the police had removed its license plates.

After attempting to explain his actions, he began to insult the officers and threatened that he would call a government minister to have them fired from their jobs.

Officers at the scene requested support from DIAS motorcycle unit and the security police in order to arrest the priest and bring the priest to the station.

Eyewitnesses said the police handled the situation professionally. “The police officers were impeccable. [The cleric] was kicking the traffic police officer and trying to hit him with the license plates. He was also hitting the regular police car that came to take him to police headquarters. Members of the public were trying to calm him down and he continued to curse the police officers with obscenities,” said one.

Local media said the priest is likely to face charges of causing bodily harm, disobedience and insulting officials.

He remains in custody, while his car was towed away.
