Even a pope is not averse to worldly pleasures.
Francis is said to have a particular fondness for sweets.
But apparently he is also familiar with the benefits of a glass of good wine.
During an audience on Monday, he praised the Italian region of Piedmont.
"Beautiful country, the land of good wine... Beautiful country!" he said in front of religious whose founder comes from the region.
He emphasised their common roots: "As you know, my family also comes from Asti."
Although he was born in Argentina's capital Buenos Aires, Francis has Italian ancestors.
His father Giuseppe Mario Francesco Bergoglio (1908-1959) came from Portacomaro near Asti, while his maternal grandparents also came to Argentina from Italy.
The Pope last visited the northern Italian region in 2022 to celebrate the 90th birthday of his cousin Carla Rabezzana.
At the time, she also revealed the pontiff's favourite type of wine: Grignolino, which is often grown in Piedmont.
