Rome's mayor Roberto Gualtieri is expecting more than 100,000 pilgrims per day for the Holy Year 2025.
He said this on Friday in a video message to participants of a Catholic meeting in Rimini.
The great Catholic pilgrimage event is a challenge that makes hands tremble, said Gualtieri.
At the same time, it is an opportunity to make Rome more beautiful, more efficient, more united, more inclusive and more sustainable, the politician asserted.
According to the Vatican News portal, Archbishop Rino Fisichella, the Vatican's Holy Year representative, compared the preparations to those for the Olympic Games: The work goes by - the important thing is to be successful in the end.
Many construction sites
Rome's mayor admitted that the city's residents would have to endure a "tough year".
But this was necessary to give Italy's capital a new face.
There are a total of 60 construction sites in the historic centre alone for the upcoming event.
In addition, there are more than 600 other projects in the city for better transport, social affairs, culture and education.
The Catholic Church proclaims a Holy Year every 25 years. One of the central elements is a pilgrimage to Rome.
The programme also includes visits to certain Roman churches.
Pope Francis will open the "Giubileo" on 24 December 2024.
